Kim Crawford Wines began in 1996 after Kim and Erica concluded that the world needed a clean, top quality, fruit-driven wines without heavy oak influence.
One of New Zealand ’s first “virtual wineries,” Kim Crawford Wines sourced its grapes from contract growers and made its wine at other wineries. Sales, marketing and administration were all managed from the Crawford’s Auckland home. Sauvignon Blanc, Unoaked Chardonnay, Tietjen Gisborne Chardonnay, and Semillon were produced the first year. Riesling was added to the portfolio the following year.
In 1998, the company was exporting to the UK, America, Canada and Australia.
