“Virtual Wineries”Kim Crawford Wines began in 1996 after Kim and Erica concluded that the world needed a clean, top quality, fruit-driven wines without heavy oak influence.
One of New Zealand ’s first “virtual wineries,” Kim Crawford Wines sourced its grapes from contract growers and made its wine at other wineries. Sales, marketing and administration were all managed from the Crawford’s Auckland home. Sauvignon Blanc, Unoaked Chardonnay, Tietjen Gisborne Chardonnay, and Semillon were produced the first year. Riesling was added to the portfolio the following year.
In 1998, the company was exporting to the UK, America, Canada and Australia.
Today, Kim Crawford Wines has a tasting room and cellar door facility in the coastal settlement of Te Awanga with a state of the art winery and premium vineyards in Marlborough. In 2006, Kim Crawford Wines was acquired by Constellation Wines U.S. and is now marketed under Icon Estates, a Constellation company.
