Handcrafted since 1861

Tintara is one of Australia’s oldest wineries founded in 1861 by Dr. Alexander Kelly, a dynamic entrepreneur who made a daring investment in the fledgling South Australia wine region of McLaren Vale. Within a year, Dr. Kelly had planted 90 acres to vines. The Vale’s pioneer and his partners cheekily named the new venture Tinitinara, an aboriginal nickname for someone who loafs about the hut, later shortened to Tintara. The old stone winery is one of McLaren Vale’s most historic landmarks.

The McLaren Vale region earned its reputation for the pioneering vintners that started growing wine grapes here in the 1800s, but Southern Australia’s promise for growing the country’s best Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes is due to Mother Nature.

With its grapes sources from its own 19th century vineyards and other McLaren Vale neighbors, Tintara’s vibrant reds are the product of this premium winegrowing district’s heavenly terroir.

Gnarled, old vines, that date back decades, are some of the winery’s most treasured vineyards and produce premium fruit destined for Tintara’s Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.
